Frequently Asked Questions
Please find below a wealth of information about teacher training. If you cannot find the answer you are looking for, please get in touch admin@yhtt.ac.uk or 01482 567793.
To be eligible for teacher training you will need GCSEs in English and Maths of grade 4/C or above. If you want to train as a primary teacher you will also need GCSE Science grade 4/C or above.
I addition you will need an undergraduate degree or be studying for one. We only accept applicants with at least a lower second class honours degree.
If your qualifications are from abroad you should apply to ENIC for a statement of comparability before you apply. This will confirm to us that your qualifications are of a comparable standard to UK qualifications. For further information and to apply for a statement of comparability please go to https://www.enic.org.uk/individuals/statement-of-comparability
Functional Skills and Adult Numeracy and Literacy qualifications are not considered to be of equivalent breadth to GCSEs and we do not accept them.
We also do not accept ESOL or IELTS as an equivalent to qualification instead of GCSE English.
We do not accept university entrance exams as equivalent to GCSEs.
If you do not have the required GCSEs we recommend that you complete GCSE equivalency tests instead. We do not recommend re-sitting your GCSEs in the summer prior to starting your teacher training as you will not receive your GCSE results until the end of August. GCSE equivalency tests give you a result in a few short weeks.
We accept the following GCSE equivalency test providers:

A Star Equivalency | GCSE Equivalency Tests & Courses
No. You do not need school experience before you apply. However, we recommend that you spend at least a couple of days in school prior to starting your teacher training course to make sure that teaching is the right career for you and that you have chosen the right subject or phase. This is particularly important if you are a career changer who has not been in a classroom for a long time.
You can book school experience at any of our primary and secondary schools (any many others) by visiting Get school experience | Get Into Teaching GOV.UK
School experience will not only give you an opportunity to observe classroom practice and get an impression of possible placement schools, but you will also be able to speak to experienced teachers to find out what the life of a teacher is really like.
You do not need to wait to apply. You can apply as long as your degree will be completed by 31 August of the year you are starting your teacher training.
