Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships (PGTA)

The postgraduate teaching apprenticeship (PGTA)  is a 1-year programme designed to develop existing school staff (TAs, Instructors, Cover Supervisors etc.) to gain QTS while remaining with their employer and earning a salary.

The course is not open to applicants who do not have an employer to support their apprenticeship.

Information for Applicants

The entry requirements for the postgraduate teaching apprenticeship (PGTA) are the same as for any initial teacher training course. Applicants must have completed the following prior to commencing their apprenticeship:

  • an undergraduate degree

  • GCSEs in English and Maths (grade 4/C or above) and also GCSE Science (grade 4/C or above) if they are applying to teach in a primary school

  • have lived in England for 3 years prior to commencing their apprenticeship

Our apprenticeships start each year in September and the training finishes at the beginning of July. Applications must be received by the beginning of June each year to allow for the recruitment process prior to induction.

Postgraduate teaching apprenticeships (PGTA) are a brilliant way to upskill existing staff to gain QTS without them leaving your employment.

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree and GCSEs in Maths and English (to train in a secondary school) and also GCSE Science (to train in a primary school).
