Am I eligible for a funded SKE course?

To be eligible for a funded SKE course you must have a conditional offer for a teacher training course and the completion of the SKE course must be a condition of your offer. For Teach First applicants, your ITT contractor must have made a recommendation for the completion of an SKE course.

In addition you must also have at least a lower second class honours degree and be eligible for student finance. Overseas participants are eligible for SKE courses in French, Spanish and Physics regardless of their residency status. All other entry requirements still apply.

If you have completed a degree in a matching subject within the last 5 years, you will not be eligible for an SKE course.

What length of SKE course should I apply for?

If you are applying for a funded SKE course, your ITT provider must specify the length of the required SKE course in your offer.

If you are self-funding, it depends on which key stages you will be teaching. Please have a look in the relevant subject section.

Am I eligible for the SKE bursary? How do I apply?

Accepted Answer

There are bursaries available for SKE participants in Physics, Chemistry (enrolled by 27 March 2026), Spanish, French, Maths and Computer Science. To be eligible for the SKE bursary you need to:

- be eligible for student finance
- have at least a lower second class honours degree
- have an offer for a teacher training place
- the completion of the SKE course is a condition of the offer
- not have completed a degree in a matching subject in the last 5 years

What is the format of the SKE course?

Each module follows this  format

Complete the subject knowledge assessment
Complete the subject knowledge audit
Watch the recordings and complete any associated study tasks
Prepare your assignment (end of module summary and reflection)
Complete the subject knowledge assessment again. You need to score at least 80% on the second attempt to pass.
Submit your assignment to your SKE tutor via the VidLearn platform.

Throughout the course you will be supported by your SKE tutor.

How am I assessed?

To pass the course you need to pass your subject knowledge assessment with at least 80% and you need to pass the end of module summary and reflection. The subject knowledge assessment is marked automatically. The end of module summary and reflection is marked by your tutor.

Question 7

How much is a self-funded SKE course?

Accepted Answer

Payment of the full course fee is required upfront as you will receive access to all course materials and the support of the course tutor upon enrolment.
